DAY 199 – 2 October 2020

And so we arrive at the penultimate daily entry into my diary. It’s been quite a journey but I’ve had my amazing children and long suffering wife to keep my company. Although their most common utterance over the last 199 days has been “are you nearly there yet?” In fact you know this whole thing has gone too far when your 5 year old looks up and says “that’ll be a good thing to put in your blog!”

I’ve had one of my wife’s special French Martinis so apologies in advance for any typos tonight. She tells me she put less gin in than normal, but I really don’t believe her! Onwards and upwards into the top 5:

1. Friday mornings are all about bounding out of bed and getting going early because everyone knows the sooner you start, the sooner you finish. Try telling my kids that! We actually had to wake M up and when we went to get his sister up she was sitting reading books and very reluctant to leave her room. She’s turned into a right bookworm recently. By the time I finally got them downstairs and made their toast for breakfast, I wasn’t paying too much attention to what was happening. Schoolboy error! Apparently the triangles I cut for M were exactly right and therefore the squares I cut for E were completely wrong. How dare I?! This parenting lark is so difficult especially when their entirely reasonable demands change day to day! 🍞

2. Steph was lucky enough to do the school run this afternoon and found E waiting with a pair of paper dragon wings she had made. Because she was wearing them she couldn’t wear her coat or her bag but apparently it was all just too much for her to carry. “I just can’t do it Mammy. These wings are so heavy so you’ll just need to carry all of my things for me.” Who knew that paper wings were such a weight? Definitely no exaggeration there. 🐉

3. I came home from work to find out that E had achieved 100% in her spelling test at school today. I was overjoyed that all the work we have been doing has paid off. I can only assume she got the naughty words out of the way earlier in the week so she wouldn’t trip up today. And as with everything success just means moving on to the next level which is even harder. I’ve had a quick look ahead and next week they have unwisely put “full” and “stick” next to each other. I really hope she doesn’t mix them up… 🤭

4. We were treated tonight to a liturgy led by E who insisted that it is what we need to do every Friday night. She taught us our prayer position options and then offered to make up a prayer on the spot. It was genuinely lovely, all about how God loves us even if we are bad, how he tries to give us good habits and how we need to try and be kind. I mean it did go on a bit but the sentiment was perfect. I’ll confess to being a bit thrown by the part about putting fruit down the toilet but after later clarification, it just meant my last entry in the top 5 was easily selected! 🙏🏻

5. So, fruit down the toilet. After liturgy was finished I asked for an explanation. Apparently “someone” at school put a banana (including its skin) down the toilet but my daughter doesn’t know who did it. She then told me there was an apple down there too. And maybe an orange. I’ll confess to being a tad concerned about the extent of her detailed knowledge of this incident and given her chosen theme for the impromptu liturgy I wonder if there is more to this story. I suppose it would have been more concerning if it was toothbrushes being put down there! 🍌
